Desert Trail 2024

TacTik (short Thule Type Carrier with Gear 2024-02-25

The Desert Trail trip is coming up fast…over 2,000 miles from the CA border with Mexico to Canada. I will be the trail angel this time and Yeti will hike. Yeti and I have been planning for months for this trip. Our car is outfitted to the nines with high tech, so that I have WIFI and cell service anywhere – courtesy of a Starlink system mounted on the top of the car. We also have a roof top carrier for gear and supplies. The car will be full! I have had to learn a lot of tech-y stuff so I can be a good trail angel.

I will follow him via our Garmin Minis – he’ll ping every ten minutes, so I’ll know where he is and when he’ll get to any resupply points. With the WIFI I can fire up the laptop to get to the Desert Trail Mapshare page and his special Desert Trail map that friends can go to and follow us. He’ll post in a journal when in towns, so that will be less frequent.

The long-range forecast looks favorable. We always have to be on the look out for snow along the route. It will take two days to get to the CA/Mexico border where the route begins.

Yeti starts in Jacumba Hot Springs, CA by the Mexican border. We are staying at the newly renovated Jacumba Hot Springs hotel. Yeti will do a short day on Monday, March 4 and begin the railroad tracks into Corizzo Gulch the following day. He hopes to get to the first Resupply at Anza Borrega State Park that same day. I’ll be waiting at the other end.

Getting excited!
