Photo: Squaw Trail Ascending
The weather was a bit unstable today with thunderstorms in the forecast. It sprinkled a bit as we went to get our coffee and breakfast in the motel lobby. So, we went back to our room after for a while.
It improved a bit and we went to do a nearby short hike that was just 10 minutes from our motel. It was the Squaw Trail and it headed up the red cliffs that surround Kanab at the north side. It turned out to be a lovely trail and gave a lot of bang for the effort. Very interesting rock formations, great views down onto Kanab, and not too steep a climb...650 feet of elevation gain.
We could see a storm in the valley. I saw one lightning bolt and there was thunder, but we guessed it would pass us by and it did. We got sprinkled on a few times, but the main storm clouds stayed over the valley.
From the top, you can see into the next valley with views of the Vermillion cliffs - variegated colored cliffs with pinks, reds, oranges, whites. Very dramatic. We returned the way we came. Easier going down!
Glad to have done the hike even though a short one. We went to our favorite Rocking V Cafe for lunch. Now we are relaxing. Just heard some more thunder.
We did get some texts from Fairweather and she was nearing the Nankoweap Trail. In the end, she bumped into the three section hikers Yeti had met in Bryce and they were all going down together. We are happy she has company and it sounds as if they are getting down that trail ahead of any bad weather. Very relieved as we probably won't hear from her until she surfaces at the South Rim on the 9th. Probably no cell service anymore. Lucky to have gotten those messages.
