Fri Sep 4 It was to be another big climbing and descending day, so we opted to take the chair lift at Passo Falzerego up to R. Scoiatolli, saving us about a 3-hour climb. It’s fun going up the lifts, you get a spectacular panoramic view of the mountains. Up top, we had a spectacular view back of the valley and dramatic cliffs all around. Our trek took us by dramatic rock formations and by late lunch we were at Croda da Lago – and the rifugio by the lake. We stopped for lunch there. Next, we had a BIG descent (about 600 feet?) down to Malga Federa, our home for the night. It was a long, steep downhill, which we would have to re-climb the next morning! But, what a lovely surprise to see Malga Federa. It was a great rifugio in a stunning setting – the light in late afternoon turned the mountains orange, gold, and red. They were hosting an event, so the staff was certainly busy. Our private room was in a new addition to the older building and was very modern and lovely. Food again was excellent. We did some wash, hung it in the sun, and passed a peaceful evening here!
