Sat Sep 5 We left before breakfast, so we'd get the climb in early. It would be one of the longer days (11..9mi/17km) and have quite a bit of climbing and more descent. We arrived at the rifugio by the lake and were able to get coffee and a snack. We proceeded to Forcella Ambriozolla, which featured fantastic rock formations. Most of our uphill for the day was done. Our walk took us by lovely high green hills and valleys. After slabbing around another dramatic rocky mountain (the Pelmo?), we dropped down to Rifugio Citte di Fiume where we enjoyed coffee and Linzertorte. Next came a challenging crossing over a rock field that had a slide. A bit tricky but we got past that fine. The rest of the route was through trees and then down to another road and lunch at R. Staulanza. The last stretch included steep downs, so Desiree opted to take a bus to our Rifugio Palafavera just down the road. My hike was supposed to take about three hours, but first there was a discrepancy between our written itinerary and the GPS tracks. I could see where the track went on the map, so I followed the GPS. Then further down, the way I was supposed to go was closed, so I just followed signs and got down okay. I think this way was shorter and I even beat Desiree here! I found a banana at the little market across the street. I miss fresh fruit. We have a private room and bath here. It’s a very busy place, with another rifugio as well as a campground/RV park across the street.
