Home Renovation - 2024 Week 7

Week of August 5th It was a big week and a lot got accomplished. It is beginning to look more like a house again! The cabinets are fully installed with cabinet pulls attached. The microwave is in also.

Zack and Chris were working on getting the floors finished and the quarter-round installed. Quarter-round provides a finish between the flooring and the wall or baseboard.

On Thursday, Monteriors fabrication shop delivered and installed the quartz countertops in the kitchen and in the bathrooms – both vanities get the same stone. In the bathroom, the quartz is also used for the backsplash but in the kitchen we had to select a different backsplash. The reason for this has to do with matching up the veins of black in the stone. I would have needed another whole slab to use stone for the backsplash and that would have been very expensive and wasteful.

The stone guys also cut the holes for the kitchen faucets. The sinks in the bathroom are also installed and holes are there for those faucets. The stone looks fabulous. Very dramatic.

Next: the plumbing. Ed, the plumber, has a big job. He is installing all of the faucets, the tub and those fixtures, and the shower fixtures. Additionally, he will install a new hot water heater, a water softening system, and an upgrade for our turn-off valves in the laundry. So, he has his work cut out for him. He is starting today and will work over the weekend and hopefully finish his part of the job.

Our new bathroom window (which opens!) arrived and is installed. The only thing left to do is to fit the new trim on the window. It will be great to have a window that opens so you can get fresh air in and vent out steam. It never made sense to me that the builders put in a window that did not open.

Once the plumber is done, Brian the tiler comes back to finish trim in the bathroom and to do the kitchen backsplash.

Chris was doing prep for the plumber and also finishing some last paint jobs…closets, etc. By the end of next week, the job should be largely done – barring any unforeseen delays. The French Doors arrive on the 19th – so that will happen after everything else is finished.

Our goal is that we get the cleaners in at the end of next week and we can move back in. Quite a bit of our stuff is in the garage, so we can manage with that stuff until the rest of our belongings are moved back in on the 29th of August. Can’t wait.
