Photo: Amargosa River Gorge near China Date Ranch
We spent several days at the RV park in Shoshone after arriving here from Baker. Jac was doing the section that would end along the Amargosa River. When we arrived in Tecopa, Yeti and I immediately went to the Kit Fox Café and enjoyed coffee and lunch. We checked into the RV park that afternoon.
The plan was to try to meet Jac the next day as she approached the side trail up to China Ranch Date Farm. Yeti and I went there and had our date shakes – mine was a coffee date shake! I hiked down with some water in case she needed some and settled on a rise where I could see the river valley, though the actual river was not in sight. It was also terribly overgrown with brush. I sat there for 4 hours and decided I might have missed Jac. She wasn’t expecting us there, so she would not have diverted over to the side trail. When I got up, it turned out she was walking in the riverbed and would not be able to see me. I was not able to see her either. She was going very slowly because of the brush and had not yet reached the spot where the side trail came out. So, Yeti and I went back to Tecopa realizing that our plan was futile.
We watched her slow progress. We were at the café and had dinner as we waited. Finally Jac arrived just before the café closed so she was able to order dinner. After dinner, we all went back to the RV park and Jac got a tent sight.
Next day we drove to Pahrump, NV just 27 miles away to shop and re-supply. Chore day, with laundry and showers.
I have taken several walks on bird-watching trails that are right across from the RV park. They are great – easy and very convenient.
On Monday, Jac took off to start the next sections which would bring her into Death Valley NP. I met her in the afternoon at Hwy 178 with water. Her next section would be quite difficult with several tough pour offs to drop down. She and I figured that she’d get out near Badwater (our next meeting spot) on Wednesday morning.
Yeti and I decided he needed a motel for the next night, and we went to Pahrump as it was the closest place. So, that is where we are Tuesday night, April 28th. Tomorrow, we will meet Jac in the morning near Badwater in Death Valley!!!!
